I'll buy my daffodils from the Supermarket thanks!
Before I continue, the Field Flowers Subscriptions are not just Daffodils in Spring! You'll also receive heavenly Tulips, ruffly Ranunculus and Anemones to die for, too. Our promise to you is that each bunch will leave you wanting more and more of our seasonal flowers.
But to address the title. Why would a small urban flower farm grow daffodils when you can buy 10 for £2 in Sainsburys? And why would you then choose to buy them from us?
I know that Silver Grey Foliage can't compete on price. And I'm not going to suggest that we'll try - so I guess if price is the sole driver when you're buying flowers, you probably shouldn't read on.
Here at Silver Grey Foliage Antony and I grow flowers in Leeds and for Leeds. But flowers are not just flowers. I don't choose to grow any old flower and daffodils are no exception to this rule.
I don't grow plain yellow trumpets. You can buy these in buckets at the M&S checkout. Sure, those flowers will fill a vase, but you'll ignore the splodge of yellow until it goes brown and then throw them away. Those daffodils are background fillers.
I grow daffodils with distinctive colours and shapes. You deserve the best daffodils, daffodils that are interesting to look at and enticing to smell. Silver Grey Foliage Daffodils fill a vase and state their presence. You'll want them in a prominent position, you'll make sure that they're visible in your Zoom call and you'll be sad when they reach the end of their smiley days. And, in Antony's words 'Blimey, do they smell nice!'
These are some of the Daffodils that we're growing:
Daffodil Bridal crown - these are multi headed daffodils with white ruffles and yellow centres on tall stems. They have the sweetest perfume. I love them.
Daffodil Sophie's Girl - A white Daffodil with an apricot cup.
Daffodil Skype - the petals of these daffodils bend back like wings. I mean who wouldn't want a flying daffodil?
Daffodil Actea - White rounded and overlapping petals with a red-rimmed yellow cup.
Daffodil Haemoor - So these are definitely yellow, but there's not a trumpet in sight. Just ruffles and roufles of deep yellow petals on long stems. Like a Ranunculus you'll stare into them, forgetting what you're supposed to be doing!
I'm sorry that I can't show you picture of these, but here are some of our daffodils from last year. The picture is of a 'floral flat lay'. This is when you take flowers apart and lay them out in a pattern - in this case I have floated them on water. It's really therapeutic and may form a workshop one day!
Daffodils are the amongst the first flowers that we grow. It means we can bring you flowers worth having in your vase early in the year. Daffodils will fill your home with early spring joy that you'll pay attention to them in your kitchen or on your desk.
So in answer to the question, if you want flowers that state their presence and add something to your home, that you value when they arrive and you'll miss when they're gone, sign up to to the Spring Flower Club here.
Thank you
Rebecca
